Ho Ho Ho, Jingley Balls

Last day of my best's visit. Boo! Will be back full force tomorrow(Thursday. Seriously have missed you all. Hate to think about all the great stuff I have missed from you too...) Thanks for being so patient and wonderful!!

But,

IT'S CHRISTMAS WEEK! Hurray!!! Holidays!!!!

No Writery Wednesday this week. Most people are taking breaks, so I'll just use it to celebrate.

I'm off for the week after Christmas. Mandatory vacation(not a complaint) Intending to use it for writing things and NOT sleep till noon and watch daytime T.V. until I start foaming at the mouth. Nope. Definitely not that.

This Christmasy post could have been all about how I love to go light looking. How Christmas lights always brighten my holidays. And how the people right across from us put up some beautiful and TASTEFUL lights this year so every time I shuffle to the kitchen at night my whole room is full of red and green and gold loveliness.

It could have been about my favorite part of Christmas morning (no not the presents). The STOCKING. Why is this the best thing to "open"? No idea. It just is.

It also could be about the foo. OH THE HAM!!

How about the feeling in the air? The crisp ping, chance for snow/ice(gross) the necessity for a fireplace or the icicles (fake or real) sparkling from overhead? Nope. Not that either.

Or getting together with family and celebrating life and love and good things in the world.

Those of us who celebrate it for the birth of our Savior(though everyone knows by now that this isn't the actual time of year for it. I am aware of what really started it all, just like everyone else.), and that's an amazingly awesome thing for us too. And I love to remember the days when I was little and my mom would light a new candle until we got to the middle one on Christmas(eve?) She would read the story and we celebrate the life that was born to save billions. (no haters. BE NICE or BE SILENT)

Or even how I adore, no no no ADORE the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. My favorite Christmas music bunch EVER and how seeing them live is as amazing. And how these light shows, this music, and this song never ever ever get old:

But this Holiday Festive post is about none of those wonderful, amazing, fantastical things. Because I can't REALLY get into the spirit to appreciate all that without...

Elf.

Ah... Love it. Him. My favorite holiday movie. It puts me in the Christmas spirit every time. Not A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, or Miracle on 34th.

Actually. I kinda hate those movies. *ducks* It's not because they aren't good movies, it's just because they  are tedious? Aren't...fun? Umm...no no not the right word...not peppy? No...no...bland? Okay...maybe if there was a word for all of those. Lemme think... Aha!

Tedlandull? Yup. That's the word.

I have just seen them to DEATH I guess. I'm sorry if you like them. I'm not TRYING to be insulting. Good movies. But my holiday film love goes to...

Elf. And Nightmare Before Christmas. And Scrooged. And The Santa Clause. And Christmas Vacation.. Ugh! Love em! Nonconventional Christmas movies rock my holiday light-up socks. Yes indeedy! (also Anne of Green Gables and The Sound of Music are also holiday MUSTS)

But Elf is by far my favorite Christmas themed movie. Cause I like smiling. Smiling's my favorite.

What is your favorite holiday movie?? What is that one thing you need to get your holiday mojo going? If you don't celebrate Christmas, what do you celebrate and what is your favorite thing about it?

Merry Christmas! And just remember these wise words:

"We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse." - Clark W. Griswold.

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I love Elf. When he's in the store and his boss announces Santa will be coming, and he screams... It kills me every time. =o)

Favorite Christmas movie for me has to be... The Muppets A Christmas Carol. I really need to buy that on DVD. But I still love watching White Christmas and The Grinch and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Last night I watched the version of A Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge, just because.

Ooo, and I just remembered that I love the Christmas movies with Steve Gutenberg as Santa's son looking for a bride. =oD

  2. There are some small local variations. In America you open Christmas presents in the morning Christmas Day (25. Dec), right? In Winterland, we open the presents after dinner on Christmas Eve (24.Dec).

Whatever, I hope you're getting everything on your wishlist. Merry Christmas >:)

  3. Aw! I love Elf! I tend to cry a lot at strange times in movies and that is one such movie (I cried when they are all singing at Central Park) I really shouldn't be crying during Will Ferrell movies but I don't know what came over me. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of Ann of Green Gables. I love that mini series and which I could watch it right this second. The one thing I need to feel like it's the holidays is to hear Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer at least once on the radio. Haven't heard it yet. With the modern convenience of Pandora, I could probably make it happen. ;-) Merry Christmas!

Have a very productive week after Christmas, and a wonderful Christmas day!!

  6. Yay, CHRISTMAS!!!!

My fave is A Christmas Story. :) Silly holiday fun! "I can't put my arms down!" hehehe....

My favorite part of Christmas is hearing my girls wake up and RUN out their doors to see the presents under the tree. They are 8 and 3, such fun ages for Christmas excitement. :)

Have a wonderful, fun, very merry Christmas!!!

    Have a Merry Christmas.

  8. The first that gets me going are Christmas carols. I turn on my favorite station and listen for what seems like months of non-stop Christmas music.

The movie that I love the most is A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott. It is the best version in my opinion.

Elf is fun, but I love the Santa CLause. I enjoy Christmas movies so much. I try to catch them all at least once.

    Colene,

Your pics are wonderful. This is wonderful post.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS and lots of good thing in the New Year!

  11. I wish I could decorate my house with Christmas lights that could do that. :)

My favorite Christmas shows are Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown's Christmas. They're classics, and will never get old. The animation for the time period was cutting edge.

Have a safe and happy holiday, and I look forward to seeing more from you in the new year.

    Merry Christmas! :)

  13. I love Elf.

What really gets the holiday going for me is watching The Muppets Christmas Carol on Xmas eve. And seeing ym mum make her sausage stuffing. Yum.

  16. "It's a Wonderful Life". Fave Christmas movie! And I need Peppermint Lattes to get me going. Although a friend talked me into trying a Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate last night and OH MY STARS! Sooooo wicked good. Wicked because of the poundage it will add to my thighs and bum if I drink another one ever. Have a Merry Christmas!

  18. Sorry about the delete. Found a typo.
I'm admittedly kinda "meh" about Elf (parts were good, tho). How about FAMILY MAN (Nicholas Cage and Tea Leoni) and THE HOLIDAY (with Jude Law, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Winslet)?? Those are great ones too. ;o) I admit I've never seen "It's a Wonderful Life." Sounds kinda boring. LOL

  19. Love Christmas Vacation! That's my favorite Christmas movie of all time. I have to watch it several times before Christmas. I own it, but I also will watch it on TV if I happen to catch it on. I love watching A Christmas Story on Christmas day (since it's on 24 hrs, why not?) I also have to get White Christmas in, and Mikhail Baryshnikov's Nutcracker (I think it's from like, the 70's...but I remember watching it when I was really little when they used to play it on tv..brings back good memories ;)

Okay so I have to admit it...Elf is not my favorite. It's got some great funny stuff scattered throughout...like if you bring up a few funny bits from it, I'll be like, "oh yeah that was hilarious" but it's kinda like those SNL skits they make into movies- it's hilarious for a few minutes at a time, but not for 2 hours straight. Again, still has some really funny bits. Sorry I'm late on this! I haven't been on much today.

  20. Oh, we watched Elf this year in class! Lol, instead of actually working in Spanish, we sang along to the movie. (Yeah, dude, I'm proud.)
I love Nightmare Before Christmas. The music. The amusement. The weirdness. I just approve. But then, I also have a tendency to curl up with Gilmore Girls or something else equally brain-candy esque during the holidays. -shrugs- It works.

  21. Have a great Christmas. :-)

I think my favorite Christmas movie is While You Were Sleeping.

Strange, because I tend to deeply despise romantic comedies.

Maybe it's because the characters remind me of my own family at Christmas.

  22. I have next week off and am spending it writing TOO so we are in the same spot--YAY! And I adore Elf. We have a handful of Christmas movies and let the kids vote, but that one always is part of the season run. It's A Wonderful Life is actually my favorite (I adore Jimmy Stewart and I LOVE that trickling... how one life changes so many others thing--it is almost Sci-Fi, only sentimental) but Elf is up there. We have Chistmas Story and Christmas Vacation, too (Had the Grinch on video but no player) but yeah... Elf manages to get all the feel good without all the sap, and that is a hard task.

  23. I love, love, love the Siberian Orchestra. Yeah, I know, trans was supposed to come first.

Elf is great...but my all time favorite might not surprise you. It is...drum roll....Jimmy Stewart in It's A Wonderful Life. We have no one like Jimmy any more and the theme of a wonderful life is so poignant. We are all important, without us, the world wouldn't be the same.

I also have to say, I love The Nativity Story, I think that's the name? It is a fairly new release about the lives of Joseph and Mary leading up to Jesus birth. They didn't add unnecessary Hollywood anything to it. Right out of the gospel.

Tomorrow, I will post my favorite song and a gift in the comments, the java snow code.
    Merry Christmas.

  24. My favorite holiday movies are the good old cartoon classics: Rudolph and Frosty and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town... It's not Christmas without Rudolph and Herme and Yukon Cornelius and the Bumble! :-)

  25. I adore Trans-Siberian Orchestra too. A friend of mine went to see them and said it was awesome. I definitely have to do that sometime. Merry Christmas!

  26. (resists urge to tell Colene she said her favorite part of Christmas morning is the "foo") (although my 9-year-old would think that if you really thought the foo was the best part, this is the BEST. POST. EVER.)

Totally cheesy, but I like watching the Christmas movie marathons on Lifetime and the Hallmark Movie channels. So full of happy endings! (I've never seen Elf. Will Ferrell just isn't funny to me. Sorry.)

    Have a wonderful Christmas!

  28. I love Elf. Elf's my favorite!

Although I'd have to say Love, Actually is the holiday movie I look forward too. We watch it every year while decorating our tree.

Happy Holidays and good luck with all your writerly tasks this week!

  29. I haven't seen Love, Actually I don't think, Melissa! Going to now! (better be good...or else...;) Thanks so much! Merry Christmas!
